In the 2026 Winter Olympic Games 46 Ukrainians athletes have come to represent their country in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. The 25 men and 21 women are competing in 11 different sports over the 19 day period, from February 4th to February 22 these athletes will compete in the biathlon, luge, and freestyle skiing, among others. Along with them come the 42 men and women as coaches, doctors, and technical staff.

The nation's Olympians have spent years working towards this moment, many of those competitors staying in border countries such as Austria, Germany, and South Korea to complete their training, as safe spaces to train in Ukraine become increasingly slim due to war. Now, as the Winter Olympics begin, Ukrainians are able to send a message, reminding the world what is taking place in Ukraine.

In order to support these athletes many nonprofit organizations have worked together to help grow and improve future and current Olympic athletes. Notably, the nonprofit Athletes for Ukraine brings sportsmen and women together during wartime to stand up for peace and solidarity, in hopes of sending their message to Russia and the rest of the world; “the war must end!” The organization provides humanitarian aid, relief support, and support to children, families, and athletes affected by the war in Ukraine. The nonprofit makes itself unique as its founders include various sports figures, such as Jens Steinigen, Wolfgang Pichler, Moritz Geisreiter, and Felix Loch. Jens Steinigen is the key organizer and founder of Athletes for Ukraine and a former German biathlete. His athletic career includes winning third place in the men’s individual 20-kilometer race at the inaugural World Cup that took place in Pokljuka 1992 and 1993. Steinigen also won an Olympic champion title from Albertville in 1992. Wolfgang Pichler, another founder of Athletes for Ukraine, is a talented German biathlon and cross-country skiing coach, who worked with the Swedish Olympic Committee as of 2019-2023. Another founder, Moritz Geisreiter, is a German speed skater who competed at the 2014 Winter Olympics. Finally founder Felix Loch is a German luger and a three-time Olympic Champion and current competitor.

Remember as you watch this year's Olympics the challenges that these athletes face at home everyday with the uncertainty of war. Every athlete has challenges to overcome and these 46 men and women have to face more challenges than any ordinary athlete.
