The conflict in Ukraine has had a massive impact on millions of citizens since the beginning of hostilities in 2022; however, one group that does not usually get much emphasis in popular media coverage is young adults. Most of the daily media coverage around the war in Ukraine has focused primarily on military actions against Russia and the political landscape; therefore, millions of Ukrainians young adults are still negatively affected by the war in ways that are not limited to direct conflict zones. Ukrainian youth have had their education interrupted or suspended due to the war, many have experienced separation from their families and their future is uncertain.

Mental health is one area of wellbeing that is very important for young adults who are still in their developing stages. Young adults need stability, social bonding and a feeling of safety in order to continue developing and thrive. War disrupts all of these areas of development. War has created high amounts of stress in the forms such as frequent air raid sirens, temporary or permanent displacement from homes, extensive damage to schools and concerns about family members who may be living in areas impacted by war throughout Ukraine. Even young adults who have not been directly displaced from their homes, experience significant amounts of stress due to the unpredictability of their daily lives.

Education has been impacted greatly by the war as many students who lived near the conflict have had to adapt to different methods of online learning, have moved to other areas due to their homes being destroyed or unsafe to remain at, and have continued their education while trying to cope with how the war has affected them emotionally. Teachers and schools have worked diligently to create continuity through the education of these students, however, it is hard for students to concentrate on their studies when they are worried about their safety or have lost their routines and familiar surroundings. Academic achievement is not only dependent on how well students have access to educational opportunities, but is also dependent on how well students are feeling emotionally.

Despite these many challenges in pursuing their education, Ukrainian youth have shown a lot of strength and resilience through their determination. Regardless of where they may be throughout Ukraine or in other countries as refugees, students are continuing to pursue their education, participate in community activities, and support each other. Many young people have volunteered their time, organized fundraisers for other young children in need, and used social media to share their experiences with the rest of the world. Through all of these efforts, they have demonstrated the strength and resiliency that come from difficult times.

Supporting youth with mental health issues is critical for their success in meeting these barriers. In addition to providing support in schools, communities, and online, it can also be effective in reducing stigma and increasing the likelihood of youth seeking help when they require assistance through access to mental health education. As for rebuilding physical infrastructure, communities must also allocate resources towards emotional recovery.

The experiences of youth in Ukraine also serve to illustrate that the impact of war does not just include physical destruction, but also emotional and mental illness, both of which may last long after media coverage ceases. By providing support for mental health services, educational opportunities and initiatives that focus on youth, we are providing the opportunity for youth across the globe to have a brighter future.

As the conflict persists, it is important to bear in mind that each statistic represents a young person with goals, dreams and aspirations of their own; youth representatives and their resilience have demonstrated remarkable perseverance through adversity and should be commended for their efforts, as well as continue to receive attention from the global community, for their welfare.
