The Remains

As the clock continues to tick

And time moves on,

I reflect on all the lives that are gone.

The pain rests uncomfortably in my heart,

For all those who were forced to suffer their part.

The world keeps moving forward

While many stories ended in a blur.

Faces of those that risked their lives

Remain embedded in my eyes.

Where homes, buildings and parks once were

Nothing is left but scars and burns.

What used to be a bright and colorful place

There is nothing left but a trace.

Chairs empty

Beds left unmade

Dirty dishes sit in the sink

Dogs alone at home

Hoping their owner will come back

But all they can do is groan.

The war did not end

When people stopped talking about it

Nor did it pause

Lives were lost

But at what cost?

Hearts shattered in pieces,

Parts of someone's identity they didn't know they needed.

Not even time can fix some wounds

They will forever be attached to you.

The least we can do is recognise

Acknowledge the grieving

Whatever that means but to help those hearts that are healing

Hold your arms out wide for those you love

For you never know if it will be enough.
