Stumbling through this land

I thought I used to know

But now I find it in the throes

Of a war that seems to blur faces

It matters where you stand

I’m just a girl yearning for a future

One where bombs don’t drop

Where fathers don’t give their lives

For their children,

And one where goodbye isn’t learned too soon

I don’t want to see

my mother crying down in the kitchen

Wondering if we have enough food for the next day

I don’t want to see my brother cower

When we hear those sirens go off

And I don’t want to comfort him

Knowing I’m scared too

But these are the effects of war

Brought as a weight to our lives

Whether we want it or not

If I could just place one hope in myself

I’d hope that I live past 23

Hoping that I could see

All opportunity shared equally

And lives lived fully

I hope the world knows

That we’re still here

Just Europe’s lonely neighbor

With too much to tell
