More Than a Building: Saving the Heart of Ukrainian Life in New Jersey

Today, this historic site is in immediate danger. There are active plans to sell, rezone, and demolish the center to make room for a giant warehouse, which could erase one of the most significant symbols of Ukrainian-American heritage.

For decades, this center has meant much more than its physical walls. It’s been the beating heart of the Ukrainian community. Here, folks of all ages gather for holidays and memorials, meet new friends at festivals, support one another through tough times, and celebrate moments that shape our lives. It’s a place where newcomers feel the warmth of belonging, where traditions live not just in books but in laughter, conversation, and food shared around long tables.

What makes a center like this so important?

It’s not only the history. It’s the sense of belonging and community it creates.

The Center was built as part of the Metropolia complex, championed by Patriarch Mstyslav. Its plaque reads: “Erected as a memorial to the churches, libraries, and archives destroyed in Ukraine. This center will preserve the treasures of Christianity of the Ukrainian people.” These words are more than a promise, they are a commitment to memory and hope.

Beyond its religious role, the complex includes a museum, archives, library, and community spaces that have welcomed generations of Ukrainian immigrants and refugees. It has hosted events uniting local residents and international guests, connecting people through shared language, history, and art.

For many, this center is the first step toward building a new life in a new country, sharing our roots, values, and stories with neighbors and friends, old and new. It connects us, reminds us that we’re not alone, and shows us our voice matters.

What's at Stake

If the center is demolished, an entire community could lose the place that makes it feel whole. Memories will scatter, relationships will weaken, and the next generation of Ukrainian Americans may never collect their own stories inside those walls. The loss would also extend far beyond New Jersey. It would mean the disappearance of a place that holds collective memory for thousands of Ukrainian families across the U.S. and Canada.

That’s why our Svitanok team is determined to fight for its future. We are working to protect the site’s heritage status, challenge rezoning decisions, and raise awareness through partnerships with journalists, cultural organizations, and Ukrainian-American leaders. Because we believe every community deserves a place to belong and thrive.
